I think I toasted the sound on my netbook, so I’m getting an old P4 3GHz desktop for cheap (I’m poor).

I’m thinking, maybe I can still use the netbook to run Seq24 and use the desktop for Zynsubaddfx using Netjack2. This would be cool because with the netbook alone, all I could do was load sampled instruments into Hydrogen.

I ordered a USB to ethernet converter so I can connect the machines, and I just installed jack2-svn.

What else? I have the NetJack2 Walkthrough page bookmarked. It just assumes you will network your computers, but it is vague as to how. Should I use VNC? I’m a networking dummy. I don’t have a router.

Update: I cancelled the order for usb to ethernet converter and ordered a cross over ethernet cable.

I don’t think I need VNC, I’m pretty sure a LAN, and synergy (to control two computers with one mouse/keyboard) will do the trick.

But, if I’m missing anything here, please don’t hesitate to say something.

I’m similarly network-challenged, and have damaged and/or museum-grade equipment. Have you gotten to the point where you can ping between the machines? Check
ip addr
or
ifconfig
…and get the ip addresses, then make sure you can ping the one from the other. That would be the first step, I believe.

I’m pretty sure using VNC would probably introduce some unnecessary overhead. Network sync will already introduce some latency, as will MIDI.

I am working on a similar sort of configuration here, but have some details to work out on my lan first (trying to replace a router while crash-coursing basic networking). Are you using the netbook for a dumb Seq24 engine, or are you planning on tweaking it during performance? If you can get comfortable with issuing command line controls, using ssh might be a more efficient way to run it all from a single desktop…

I realized I was getting ahead of myself with ideas of networking. I’m not using Seq24 anymore, I made the leap to Ardour3.

I wasn’t sure if a computer I could afford would have the resources to run Ardour3, or if Ardour3 was stable enough, but so far it is working out. If I can run 4 tracks of Zynsubaddfx simultaneously, that will keep me busy for quite awhile. So far I’ve got two running and it sounds great. I’ll add more today, and keep adding until I find the limit of my computer.

By the way, Ardour3 is pretty crashy, but not so bad. I figure by the time it is stable, I’ll have a pretty good handle on how to use it.
